We find out why the dance craze is so popular
Thursday , 16 May 2013

Want a booty like J-Lo, to lose weight like Kirstie Alley or get muscles like Madonna? All three are massive fans of dance fitness craze Zumba. The brainchild of Colombian dancer and choreographer Alberto “Beto” Perez launched in 2001 involving dance and aerobic exercise, whilst incorporating the moves of hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo, martial arts and Bollywood. Approximately 14 million people a week shake their hips like Shakira at a weekly Zumba class. So why is this craze so popular and not just with us normal folk but the A-list too? J-Lo credits Zumba as a great way to release stress and keep you happy. Jordin Sparks is a Zumba devotee and credits the rhythmatic workout with helping her  lose 30lbs. Madonna loves the  dancing-based fitness classes so much that Zumba is a main offering in her  Hard Candy fitness centres around the world.
To see what all the fuss was about we went along to the My Dance Box event ‘Zumba in a nightclub’ at N’Dulge, Atlantis the Palm  with super instructor Steve Bodet and over 150 other Zumba lovers to shimmy on down. Okay so we might not have had the moves like Jagger but when it came to Samba, we held our own. We danced Salsa to La Bamba, Bollywood to Jai Ho whilst toning our abs, thighs, arms and what a work out it was..  Next stop Aqua Zumba, double the fun!
Info: James & Alex 814 & 814 Concord Tower, Dubai Media City. Every Monday and Wednesday 6.30-7.30pm 50Dhs per class.
