The Spelling Bee Championship is going to be held in Dubai for the very first time

It’s
a grand old American tradition, replicated in countries across the world,
leading to lots of fierce competition and creating spelling superstars (yes,
they do exist; and in the States even get to meet the President in the White
House!). Now, the Spelling Bee Championship is coming to Dubai.

Open
to students of all nationalities from all schools in Dubai from grades six to nine,
between
the ages of 11 to 14, the UAE leg of the Spelling Bee Championship
will focus not only on memorising spellings but also in increasing an understanding
of words, their meaning, history and use.

The
format has been modified here to include American, British as well as Indian
syllabi. Plus, special allowances will be made for pronunciations and
spellings that differ in US and UK systems.

There are big prizes up
for grabs for the winning students – think laptops, Playstations, phones and cameras!
Plus, the MetLife Alico Gulf Scholarship will award them cash prizes towards a waiver
of annual tuition fees.

The winner doesn’t just
take home the Champions Trophy, they also get a whopping Dhs25,000 cash award!
The first and second runners-up get cash awards of Dhs10,000 and Dhs5,000 each.

If you’ve got kids who’re
aces at spelling the most difficult of words, get them in on the competition. They
just might be Dubai’s first Spelling Bee Champion!
