What it Takes to be a Pole Dancer on Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour by Cirque Du Soleil
Pint-sized Anna Melnikova is very soft-spoken, even when telling us that she plays the girl who walks around with a gun and pole dances to Dangerous and Smooth Criminal in Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour by Cirque Du Soleil. The show that's presented by Duvent will have its Dubai premiere on 30 December 2013 and, as part of a backstage tour, we caught up with the Russian acrobat, who's been with Cirque Du Soleil for five years. While pole dancing and Michael Jackson might not seem like an obvious combination, Anna thinks it works. Here's what we asked her...
What's your training process to be able to pole dance for the show?
I have a routine, warm-up and exercise. A lot of stretching; stretching is the secret!
Is it very tough to do?
I have a background in acrobatics, so that's helped. Plus, I've been with Cirque Du Soleil for about five years so there's that experience.
Pole dancing has a sexy image
I think it's a little bit of everything - sexy, graceful and, in this show, dangerous.
Dangerous! Now you've got to tell us about your part
I'm a Dangerous girl! I walk around with guns and dance during the song - you'll see in the show.
Tell us about your costume in the show
The costume is usually a bikini top and bottom. But [as a sign of respect to the UAE's rules and culture] there's more fabric for the show here. Generally, you've got to wear little as your skin needs to come in contact with the pole to be able to move smoothly.
Do you get nervous before opening night?
No, I feel good. Excited. We've rehearsed long and hard so no nerves.
