West Side Story

Despite a few opening-night technical hitches, West Side Story’s first show at DUCTAC was a roaring success. Kudos to Julian Essex-Spurrier, who plays ‘Riff’, for getting through his opening scene with a faulty mic – Julian, we still heard every beautifully sang word.

Shona White, who plays Puerto Rican ‘Anita’, had the Ahlan! Live team’s jazz hands all aflutter with her racy rendition of la-la-la-la America! For a moment there we all wanted to live in Amereeka. And Michael Rouse (Tony) and Elisa Doughy (Maria) gave flawless vocals to the lead character throughout. Special mentions must go to supporting cast members Sammy Moore, Joel Gray and James Casaki who we couldn’t keep our eyes off.

Such winning performances twinned with world-class vocals make this a production that’ll have you singing West Side Story classics all the way home.
