Watch This Face: Kris Fade
If waking up in Dubai with a smile on your face is a regular thing, we can only assume you’re already familiar with Kris Fade. Presenter of Virgin Radio’s ridiculously popular Kris Fade Show, the harmonica-playing Aussie born breakfast show DJ is set to add another string to his bow – or should that be reed chamber to his mouth organ? – by joining the Ahlan! team as their brand new columnist! Revealing his choice of the hottest movies, music and books every week from September in The Buzz, Kris will be spilling all the deets on the coolest (and most culturally fulfilling!) ways to spend your free time in Dubai – that’s when you’re not tuned in to his breakfast show, of course.
So what’s the lowdown on the man who bounces out of bed at 4.37am every morning to get the nation raring to go and ready for the day ahead? Born and raised in Sydney, Kris had dreams of being on radio, but it took a little while to get there. “I’ve done everything” spilled Kris. “I’ve been a cleaner, a car salesman, a horse bookie, a marketing executive and even a driver. But I would hear my local radio DJ on air and think ‘Man, I’d like to try that.’ After being cordoned off from public view for being too talkative by his mean marketing boss, Kris quit his full time job to pursue his radio dream – where talking too much is never a bad thing. Starting right at the bottom, Kris got a job driving a car around Sydney four days a week for radio station Edge 96.1, gradually working his way into the studio. A massive hit on the Australian airwaves, Kris won Best Radio Presenter at the 2007 Australian Radio Awards and the Best Radio Program in The Australia/New Zealand Urban Music Awards, before landing his dream job - setting up Virgin Radio Dubai in 2008 with Kiwi Steve. Despite having to Google Dubai just before he boarded the plane to our fair city (duh!) Kris fell in love with with everything from the beaches to the bonkers Karama markets, and decided this was the place he wanted to call home. “You gotta work pretty hard to get into this position” says Kris. “It’s a fun and exciting job that allows me to be creative, outrageous, inspiring, silly and just myself for four hours every morning. Not everyone has that luxury, and I know just how lucky I am to do this as my profession.”
Having interviewed everyone from Ice Cube to Richard Branson, four years on, and Kris has the number one radio show in the region – not bad for a guy who almost gave it all up to manage a restaurant! “There was a time in my life when I reached a fork in my career” revealed Kris. “Either I pursued radio or continue to manage a successful restaurant – I’m guessing you know which one I went for!” With no intention of setting up a schwarma stall quite yet, Kris has big plans for the rest of 2011.“We have some big things coming up at Virgin Radio – most of which I can’t talk about. But ‘Kris Fades’ House Parties’ kicks off in September – teens better be ready for fun!” But it’s not all work for the Australian motormouth. Kris is looking forward to another major event later in the year. “November is going to be a big one for me” beamed Kris. “My second child will be born – I can’t wait for my beautiful daughter to have a brother or sister to play with. Three more kids and I can start my own radio station!”
