In her interview with Cosmo, Sarah explains why she got into media in the first place – as it turns out, she did it to make you happy. Now’s your chance to make her happy, too!
COSMO: How would you describe your job?
SARAH: I’m in the ‘happiness business’. Fundamentally, as the Editorial Director of Ahlan!, it’s my duty to make my readers’ lives better in any way that I can – whether that involves getting them a two-for-one blow-dry deal to save them money, telling them about a new TV series that’s going to have them in stitches or giving them the heads-up on the hottest new openings in town, as long as I enhance their lives in some way, then I’m doing my job.
COSMO: What’s the best part about your job?
SARAH: Every year Ahlan! creates the Hot 100, a list of the UAE’s biggest influencers. In selecting the candidates I get to meet the region’s most dynamic people and try to learn from them. I also get to meet international celebrities, review the latest beauty treatments and go to all the best launch parties – but in truth I love everything about media. I’ve always been obsessed with magazines and I’m utterly fascinated by how web platforms have changed the dialogue with readers. I train my teams to write like they’re talking to their best friends, and with social media we can now have those kinds of chats with readers in real time. It’s brilliant.
COSMO: What’s been your biggest ‘OMG I can’t believe I get paid for this’ moment?
SARAH: Being flown to glam locations to watch fashion shows always ranks highly as a “how did I end up here?” moment. But even more so, when me and my team are all doubled up laughing about something random, I appreciate I’m immensely lucky to work with people I’d want to spend time with even if I wasn’t being paid for it.
COSMO: How did you get to where you are now?
SARAH: I told my teachers I was going to be a journalist when I was just 12 years old. My first job was at Maxim magazine in London when I was 21 and I’ve never looked back.
COSMO: If you weren’t a ‘media personality,’ what would you be?
SARAH: I’d like to be a tough and uncompromising female detective, like Helen Mirren in Prime Suspect or Brenda Blethyn in Vera – two women in their seventies who prove age is nothing to be afraid of!
