New Restaurant Opening: Vesna, Conrad Dubai
The start of the Slavic Cuisine Scene?
Blink and another Peruvian restaurant opens. Blink again and a pan-Asian place pops up. The UAE has no end of restaurants to choose from, but the culinary variety therein is a little lacking. Don’t misunderstand – we love Asian and Peruvian restaurants (hello, Zuma, hello, Inka), but we were happily surprised to be invited to review a Slavic one.
Vesna (translation: spring) has replaced Marco Pierre White’s steakhouse on the mezzanine level of the Conrad Hotel. Go there for cosy ambience (the place feels more like a winter lodge than spring), with flames roaring in the open kitchen, wood floorboards, exposed brickwork and vintage-style accessories, including floral teapot display sets that match the menu covers – very Cath Kidston.
Indulge in Russian classics like salmon pelmeni, or dumplings (Dhs125); hachapuri, a delicious Georgian cheese pie (Dhs68); traditional refreshing cold soups such a beetroot-based borsch (Dhs88), beef Stroganoff (Dhs248), and insanely delicious honey cake (Dhs60). Cocktails start at Dhs65 and there’s a cute and quirky lounge adjoining the main restaurant where you can enjoy a tipple or two.
