It’s no secret that most of us, who are fortunate enough to live in the UAE, love to travel – whether it’s going back to our home countries, heading on an exhilarating ski trip to the Alps, or to the beach in Bali. However, it’s likely that travel insurance is the last thing on your mind when planning these trips.
No one wants to think that something could go wrong – whether it’s misplaced baggage, lost passports or a medical emergency. Unfortunately, this can happen. In fact, it’s likely that many of you have had or know someone who has had a mishap happen on their holidays, and yet six out of 10 people in the UAE have never purchased travel insurance.
Now, RSA Insurance is hoping to raise awareness of potential travel mishaps, while turning some of your unluckiest travel experiences around. Visit their Facebook page to share your tales of woe and you’ll stand a chance to win a dream vacation worth Dhs30,000! For more information, click here.
Also, stay tuned to the Ahlan! Facebook page, this Thursday for our competition where you can win Dhs1,000 for sharing your stories. For inspiration, here are five recent claims received by travel insurers…
1 A bone to pick
A businessman travelling to Sri Lanka had his glasses damaged in a peculiar way. He accidentally dropped them on the street, and couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw a stray dog had begun eating them before they could be rescued.
2 On thin ice
A tourist, on his first ski trip to Matterhorn, had his equipment fall off the ski lift while he was heading to the top of the slope. He persuaded officials to allow him to scour the area for his skis, but unfortunately, he had no luck. He later filed a claim for them under ‘lost baggage’, which got plenty of eye-rolls from the team, but it was valid given that he had ‘Winter Sport cover’ in his policy.
3 Monkey business
A lesson for those trekking through the tropical rainforest: avoid feasting on tasty fruit, while you’re surrounded by wildlife. Especially if it’s in Thailand, as you’ll quickly find that you need to protect your food from cheeky monkeys. One unlucky traveller found that out the hard way, as she was chased for nearly 10 minutes by monkeys. Although she managed to escape, it wasn’t before getting quite a few scrapes and scratches. Luckily, her medical coverage under her travel insurance policy had her covered.
A businessman departing his neighbourhood in Kenya found the place was surrounded by angry elephants, which trampled the bridge used to access the area. As a result, he had to take a more unconventional route to the airport across rugged terrain that proved too much for his vehicle, which broke down. In the midst of the chaos, he missed his flight, but luckily, his travel insurance covered the next available one.
5 ‘Til honeymoon do us part
The Maldives is a popular spot for honeymooners, but rarely is it also the scene of relationships going sour. Sadly, a honeymoon here spelled a quick end to one couple’s marriage. The then former-husband cheekily tried to claim a refund on his wedding and honeymoon expenses. Needless to say, the claim was not accepted!
