When Uma Ghosh Deshpande followed her husband’s career from India to set up her home in Dubai in 1999, it was perhaps unprecedented at the time that she would go on to forge her own career that would lead to her being voted one of the top five most powerful women in the Middle East. As a former air hostess who joined a recruitment company for a fleeting period soon after her arrival in the emirate, Uma launched her own fashion label, Pepper, by Uma, in 2002. However, her biggest break came in 2005, when she won the runner-up title at the beauty pageant for married women – The Gladrags Mrs India Contest. Inundated with offers to walk the ramp and anchor several television shows after strutting her stuff, Uma launched her own television production house, Queen Bee.
Having conceptualised and produced several lifestyle shows, 2013 was the year that Uma’s ultimate dream came true – hosting and producing her own talk show, The Uma Show, which allowed her to interact with her audience and cover a wide variety of topics. Her influence and talent also saw her awards cabinet fill up – named as one of the top Indian Leaders of the UAE by Forbes Middle East.
