New mum Tyra Banks has taken a back seat from driving as she struggles with a lack of sleep.

The supermodel-turned-TV mogul became a first-time mother in January this year, when she and her photographer boyfriend Erik Asla welcomed a son via surrogate.

Tyra returned to the spotlight at Sunday's Simply Stylist conference in Los Angeles, and the beauty admitted sleep deprivation has been one of the toughest parts of parenthood.

"Some mornings you wake up, and you're like, 'Where am I? I don't know what's going on. And I know it's not a good idea for me to drive right now because I did not sleep,'" she laughed to E! News. "So I balance that and his dad helps, and we go back and forth so that's good."

Erik has also been doing his fair share of night changes for their tot: "Erik does about 40 per cent diaper duty at night," Tyra explained. "So we're almost 50-50."

Meanwhile, the 42-year-old star is proud of how well her team has managed in her absence, ensuring her various business ventures, including her new cosmetics collection, grows from strength-to-strength while she enjoys motherhood.

"I'm on maternity leave right now, just taking a break," she said. "I really now am empowering my team. I'm understanding delegation, understanding that I don't have to do everything to make something successful. I'm on maternity leave and Tyra Beauty is kickin' butt!"

She adds, "It just got to show, empower and empower others and you can grow."
