THE TREATMENT: If your weekly hands and feet routine involves a trip to the local beauty salon for a simple mani/pedi, hurriedly leaving with sticky painted nails and the potential for smudging on your mind, a trip to foot virtuoso Bastien Gonzalez’s Pedi Mani Cure Studio at the One&Only Royal Mirage will almost certainly change your world. I had initially popped along expecting to be told to pick my colour, go through the motions and emerge on the other side with freshly polished nails that hide a multitude of flaws, but I was wrong. To begin with, I was seated in my own private luxury treatment room, where I was introduced to Maxime, the super fun and extremely knowledgeable podiatrist who offered up some interesting insights. Aided by his fully-trained assistant Charlotte, who was in charge of the hands, we began the treatment with a quality consultation on any issues I might have been experiencing, before enjoying a synchronised four-handed treatment that focused on my nails, hands, feet, legs and arms. Maxime had a plethora of tools that allowed him to primp and preen my feet to perfection in a three-step process designed to leave my tootsies in tip-top condition. I was delighted to learn that I didn’t have to go through the skin-crawlingly arduous process of having my cuticles cut, which the Bastien school of thought believes to be unnecessary. My superfluous dry skin was removed to eliminate irregularities and dryness, followed by light nail buffing. Within a relatively short period my nails had been transformed from brittle and dry to smooth, shiny and natural. A delightful four-handed massage followed to relieve any tension and heaviness, and before I knew it my treatment was complete.
THE RESULTS: Three weeks later my toenails and fingernails are still shiny, the tips are white and, apart from the occasional shaping with an emery board, I’ve had to do little in the way of maintenance. I’ve not required a manicure or pedicure since then and the usual hard skin build-up on my feet is no more. My nails are most definitely stronger and appear much healthier.
