Travel: Taj Samudra Is Colombo's Jewel
The Taj Samudra is easily Colombo’s most well-known hotel and once you’ve stayed there it’s easy to see why. If you ask any taxi driver or tuk tuk operator where the famous landmark is, they’ll know exactly its location – facing the historic Galle Face Green. That’s how much of a staple the beautiful hotel has become.
Situated right on the beach the grand accommodation is pretty awe-inspiring. It has 300 rooms that include suites and luxury rooms, and at least six food and drink outlets ranging from Chinese, to Indian to more world cuisine. While Team Ahlan! were staying there we managed to bump into the West Indies cricket team, such is the high quality of the hotel.
As a base to explore Sri Lankan culture of all kinds, Colombo is the perfect place to leapfrog across the country on day trips with great railway connections going in every direction from Fort Railway Station.
After a few excursions around the idyllic island you’re going to want to rest and relax. Luckily for residents of Taj Samudra, this is hotel has everything you’re going to need to find your Zen. The outdoor swimming pool is reminiscent of a Mayan ruin with its tropical trees lining the artistically cracked stone ledges, and with plenty of sun loungers, you’ll never have to fight for a space.
For those of you who prefer to destress by burning calories, the onsite gymnasium is wonderfully equipped with every kind of machine and dumbbell your body can use. If you’re not fully versed in the art of working out, don’t fret – gym instructors are there to hand out towels, bottles of water and advice. In addition the hotel also has tennis courts that are free for guests to use, just make sure to book ahead because they’re very popular.
For any trip to Sri Lanka, no matter where you destination, we suggest making time in your itinerary to stop over the Taj Samudra.
