Despite global cut-backs, certain celebs can’t stop splashing their cash, but are their costly addictions masking deeper issues, or are they merely a privilege of the filthy rich?
Thanks to mum Katie Holmes, four-year-old Suri Cruise is already carrying designer handbags, Lindsay Lohan has admitted to hoarding hundreds of pairs of shoes even though she’s never worn many of them and Paris Hilton rarely goes a day without being papped in a posh boutique. Here, we reveal the inside scoop on Tinseltown’s top 10 spenders who prefer therapy of the retail variety...
“I SPLURGE ON
When it comes to shopping Gwen believes ‘less is more’ – she spends less on clothes but buys more of them! Gwen, who has her own clothing line L.A.M.B., is all about discovering kooky second-hand outfits and altering them for herself. “I’ve always loved making up my own outfits,” says Gwen, but she does have one designer weakness. “When I’m in London I act like how I think a star should – I splurge on Vivienne Westwood. I’ll buy whatever I can because I love her.”
ME FEEL BETTER”
The comeback Princess of Pop has an estimated Dhs565million in the bank and admits she shops when she’s depressed. “I can be in the dump of dumpsters and go buy a pair of new shoes and feel a bit better,” she says. “Even if it’s just for the time being, for that moment it’s what I need.” But Brit’s not just a design label junkie, she’s into high-street brands too. “I like Bebe, Armani Exchange and Abercrombie Fitch,” says the celeb who describes herself as a “real girl who loves to shop”.
“I DON’T HAVE TO CALL A
Despite her protests, J-Lo is renowned for her spending power, especially now she has twin babies to spoil. She’s rumoured to have spent thousands of Dirhams on Max and Emme, with diamond-studded rattles, Shetland ponies and 600-thread count Egyptian cotton sheets on the shopping list. “I don’t have to call the shopaholic hotline or anything, but I definitely enjoy shopping. My biggest extravagances are probably shoes and clothes.”
“I OWN 50 PAIRS OF JEANS!”
Gossip Girl Blake is very serious when it comes to shopping. Just like her character Serena in the hit show, Blake loves to shop. But instead of trawling the stores for pretty dresses and sexy shoes, she’s more likely to be found in the denim department, with her latest style find being DL1961’s Melissa wide-leg jeans. “I have fashion splurges often – I own 50 pairs of jeans and buy them one size too small because they stretch a size and, plus, it sucks you in if they’re a bit too small.”
SARAH JESSICA PARKER
“I’M NOT PROUD OF
Sarah Jessica Parker’s passion for fashion runs so deep she doesn’t care how much money she spends on shoes or how much they hurt her feet – she has to have them. “I’ve been working so hard, I think, why can’t I have another pair of those Manolo Blahniks?” It’s estimated she owns 100 pairs of the shoes, which range from Dhs1,100 to Dhs3,500, and she wears them at all times – “I can run a marathon in heels” – despite them giving her bunions. “I’ve virtually destroyed my feet, but I like what a high heel does to a person,” adds the SATC2 star.
DITA VON TEESE
“I’M ADDICTED TO UNDERWEAR”
The burlesque beauty loves to shop for designer classics and underwear. “I’m addicted to vintage clothing,” she admits. “It’s not uncommon for me to walk into a vintage store and leave with 20 dresses. And I have a major crush on lingerie, too. I have trunks full of lingerie in storage – a whole room solely for my lingerie. I’ve no idea how many pieces I have exactly, too many to count, hundreds at least. I’m sure that I wouldn’t have to do laundry for at least two years if I didn’t want to, and I always buy more than one version of the things I like.”
“I NEVER WEAR THE SAME OUTFIT TWICE”
Paris is a well-practiced shopper and reportedly spends an average of 25 to 30 hours a week buying clothes and accessories. Like SJP, the heiress is addicted to shoes and says, “I just adore them.” But unlike the Parker, Paris has a big issue with designer footwear. “I have to be careful,” she laments, “as I have such large feet and I see all these super cute shoes in stores – Guccis, YSLs, Manolos – but when they bring them out in my size, they look like clown shoes.” Sorry, Paris, our pity-ometer ain’t moving for you.
“MY SPENDING’S OUT OF HAND”
The actress – who once spent more than Dhs70,000 in 20 minutes – managed to keep her spending habit under wraps until she invited TV cameras into her home. It showed rooms filled with unworn clothes, and one entire room had been converted into a shoe closet, where hundreds of boxes were piled high. The avid shopper openly admits her obsession is getting a little too much; “I ought to get rid of some stuff.”
“I’D SHOP EVERY DAY
IF I COULD”
Posh really is the Queen of Shops and in a league of her own when it comes to burning the plastic. On a recent shopping spree in Harrods, Vic and hubby David spent Dhs8,500 on gold-plated headphones and Dhs4,500 on a white crystal iPad cover. Bling bling! On clothes, the style-obsessed ex-Spice Girl, who has launched her own fashion line, is believed to spend up to Dhs2.5million a year. “I can’t help it,” she says. “When I see something I like, I buy it in every colour, and then I buy shoes and handbags in every colour to match. I’m definitely a shopaholic.”
“SURI PICKS OUT HER OWN CLOTHES”
Our youngest celebrity shopaholic to make the list slides straight in at number one, thanks to mom Katie Holmes, co-founder of the fashion label Holmes and Yang. Four-year-old Suri Cruise, who has several blogs dedicated to her dress choices, has a wardrobe worth an estimated Dhs11million, and is frequently seen wearing designer dresses and even heels! The little fashionista is known for hitting the headlines with her controversial fashion statements, and outdid herself when she was spotted carrying a Ferragamo purse worth Dhs3,000!
