So What’s Arthur’s Day?
A celebration of Arthur Guinness, the day was originally conceived to mark 250 years since he created his brewery at St James’s Gate, Dublin. The first event was held on 23 September 2009, and though some claimed it was a marketing ploy by the drinks company, celebrations were held as far afield as New York and Kuala Lumpur. The event has now become a firm annual fixture in the Irish party scene on the last weekend of September. This year a concert in Dublin will feature big names including The Script and Emeli Sandé, while acts such as The Saturdays and Scissor Sisters have played in previous years. Sir Bob Geldof has also been involved. According to Guinness, this year the day will be celebrated in 32 countries, with the big moment coming at 5.59pm (a play on the year 1759 when the brewery opened), when drinkers will raise a glass to the memory of Arthur. Sláinte!
James Walsh at Barasti, Dubai
The former frontman of indie band Starsailor is the main attraction at Ahlan!’s favourite beach bar Barasti’s Arthur’s Day celebrations. After selling three million albums with the north-of-England-based band, James went solo. He’s had plenty of success, touring with Sheryl Crow and Sting, plus he’s recorded a solo album with American singer/songwriter Suzanne Vega. After playing the venue a couple of years ago, he’s back for Arthur’s Day… despite not being Irish. But we’ll forgive him.
