How to follow in the footsteps of Charlize Theron, plus you've got to watch Elysium

Hop Fest 2013
Thursday 29 to Saturday 31 August
Celebrity grain fans include actress Charlize Theron, and some stars even brew their own! The White House has its own grain, as do band Hanson… It’s called MMMHop. We kid you not. This popular annual event celebrates everything ale with hops from around the world. The Irish Village’s air-conditioned party venue also features live music all day from Ahlan!’s 2012 Best Music Act winners, The Maplejacks, plus Carmen and the Black Ts, and KRM. Cheers!
INFO: 12 noon to 12 midnight, Irish Village, Dubai, 04 239 5000,

Harry Ghattos
Oh how we love a good sing song! And so do the celebs! Actress Kate Hudson has admitted: “I’m the annoying person at the party who always sings. I just can’t help it.” Penelope Cruz has said she even has her own karaoke machine! This is the original Dubai karaoke bar, and one of Team Ahlan!’s faves. It’s just re-opened after Ramadan, and with 1,000 songs to choose from you won’t be able to resist the mic.
INFO: 12pm to 3am (Saturday to Thursday), 8pm to 3am (Friday), singing starts at 10pm, Jumeirah Emirates Towers, Dubai, 04 319 8088,

Scott’s Abu Dhabi
This Middle Eastern branch of the famous British restaurant opened earlier this year, and if you fancy a treat, it could be just the spot. The menu includes indulgences such as oysters and caviar, while we expect the puddings (including honeycomb crackle bombe with dark chocolate sauce) to be worth a taste. Cheryl Cole is among the A-listers spotted leaving the original branch in London’s swanky Mayfair.
INFO: 12pm to 3pm, 7pm to 11pm, Etihad Towers, Abu Dhabi, 02 811 5666,

Mad Men’s Night
Monday 26 August
Forget ladies’ nights, go all Don Draper by heading to this new creation: a men’s night! Every Monday it’s all about the guys at Media One in Dubai Media City. The DJ will spin Sixties-style tunes to get you in the Mad Men mood, while blokes will get two free drinks. Girls, for a change, will have to pay for theirs – though at Dhs28 each you can’t really grumble. There’s also a Sixties-themed food platter on offer. We’re not quite sure what they ate in the Sixties, though a quick Google suggests Pop Tarts and instant mash were all the rage in 1964, so it could be good.
INFO: 6pm to 9pm, Media One Hotel, Dubai Media City, 04 427 1000,

This new Matt Damon movie has just hit movie screens and it’s an epic watch! Also starring Jodie Foster, it’s set in the year 2154, when the wealthy live on a space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth.
INFO: At cinemas across the UAE from Wednesday 21 August.

Wheeler’s Ladies Night

There is also a DJ playing retro and house tunes.
