Tom Urquhart & Lucan Toh

06 Mar 2013

While each of these media stars ticked off achievements in his own right in 2012, they grew to be friends and now business partners with the setting up of a local production company

Lucan Toh (L)
The producer of Having You – out soon!

It was a proud moment last year for this venture capitalist turned film producer when he completed the final take of his movie Having You starring Anna Friel under the wing of his new production company Wigwam Films.

Tell us about Having You.
It’s a smart, sharp, bittersweet comedy-drama all about modern relationships and trying to do the right thing.

When’s it out?
We’re set for a UK release in May 2013, with a European-wide release shortly after.

Did you work closely with Anna? Go on, tell us, what’s she really like?
I have no gossip, I’m afraid. She’s very cool, relaxed; a wonderfully talented actress and an absolute professional.

What’s next?
Now that Wigam Films has finally launched, we’re all set up to develop up to 10 films or TV assignments over the next three years. Our next project is set to shoot in New York in September – very exciting.

What’s the best advice you have ever been given?
Listen more than you talk.

Tell us about your relationship with Tom.
We drink lots of coffee together and live a stone’s throw from each other. We’ve been developing ideas for TV and film projects in the UAE and GCC market. The idea is to create great local content that can be sold or syndicated internationally. Our projects sit under the banner of TohTom Media – at least we find that funny.

Tom Urquhart (R)
Dubai One presenter and host of The Grill on Dubai Eye

As co-host of Studio One, this debonair Brit chalked up copious celebrity meets in 2012, as well as hosting Dubai’s first reality TV show, The Entrepreneur.

2012 has been a busy year. Tell us about it.
It’s been great. Studio One [Dubai One, weeknights at 7.30pm] has gone from strength to strength, and we had some great guests – Marco Pierre White, Sir Terry Wogan, Danni Minogue, Gary Rhodes. I was also host for season one of The Entrepreneur – a great experience, but I’m still getting stick from friends about the size of those billboards!

What was the highlight?
Probably hosting the Oxfam/Dubai Cares dinner during DIFF. We raised over $500,000 with one of the most infectious charity auctions I have ever been involved with. Colin Firth sold the suit off his back and Freida Pinto put her dress under the hammer all in the name of charity.

So, what if you had to choose between TV and radio?
Well, you don’t need as much makeup for radio! But both share one thing – they are live, and that’s where my passion is. You don’t have the luxury of cutting and going again.

What’s the deal between you and Lucan?
He employed me to be his friend! Seriously though, we have a shared passion for creating content – Lucan through his films and me through TV, radio and videos. We want to generate some original ideas and content for production in the region.
