Keira Knightley at the Golden Globes

Thirty people made her gown

Naturally, the usual sartorial excesses were present and correct on the red carpet at this year's Golden Globes. Reese Witherspoon carried off the gong for Most Expensive Accessories ($600,000 diamond earrings, $695,000 platinum ring, $200,000 diamond bracelet – that’s five grand short of $1.5 million, or AED 5.5m), but the award for Most Labour-Intensive Outfit has to go to Keira Knightley, after she pointed out on the red carpet that her butterfly-inspired Chanel dress was a ‘work of art’.

"It took thirty people to make this in a week, so I owe thanks to those thirty people," she said. “It makes me really frightened — what if I spill something? It’s going to make me feel incredibly guilty, so hopefully I won’t!” Unfortunately, said bibbed gown (with the sort of frill-work last seen on those dolls that hid toilet rolls) was a regular entrant on various websites’ Worst-Dressed list – but on the plus side, she didn’t get any champagne spills or brown sauce down it.

At the other end of the scale, the final word has to go to George Clooney, who was there to pick up a Lifetime Achievement award and ferry new wife Amal about. While he was sensible to admit that his main task for the night was to ensure that nobody accidentally stepped on Mrs Clooney’s Chanel train, he also revealed that his outfit was the same one he got married in at Venice last September. Hey, if it’s good enough for your most special of days, it’s good enough for any other time…
