It’s no secret that Emirati astronaut, Hazza Al Mansouri will be the first Arab to venture into space in September (YAY) but the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre is taking it up a notch to reduce Hazza’s homesickness by sending him along with local Emirati dishes...though not in the traditional context.
Maintaining the Emirates’ love for hospitality even in space, Hazza Al Mansouri will host an Emirati night in the International Space Station. Al Mansouri will be dressed in the traditional Emirati attire and will offer fellow astronauts three traditional Emirati foods prepared by a team of specialists– madrooba (chicken or fish dish), saloona (spicy stew) and baleet (a sweetened vermicelli dish) for the first time in a non-gravitational environment.
The food is going to be served in a slightly less glamourous way, pureed into tubes and packed in aluminium cans. The astronaut said: "The meals are prepared according to specific requirements to provide a balanced nutrition while ensuring that they are easy to carry, store, and use in a non-gravitational environment. These foods are processed at high temperatures to be stored for long periods. During the training period, we evaluated about 200 different types of halal food on a scale of one to nine from most to least favourite. We enjoyed our experience in tasting Emirati foods prepared for space, but the taste of the food prepared for space varies compared to the food we eat on earth.”
Hazza Al Mansouri along with his Russian colleagues are set to lift off to space in the Russian Soyuz MS-15 spacecraft on September 25th
