There are more five-star hotels in the UAE than we can shake our Amex at, but when it comes to cool low-cost accommodation, the country has been sadly lacking – until now. Rove Downtown Dubai is a new kind of hotel in the region. If you’ve stayed at any on-a-shoestring hipster hotels in New York’s up-and-coming districts you can probably feel the vibe – cool without trying too hard, minimalist with splashes of quirky colourful art (in the lobby there’s a bike on the wall), and slogans adorning the walls, from wordplay promos such as “No place like #Rove” to the matter-of-fact “This is where I am” (deliberately great for taking selfies next to). Facilities include café Daily, offering eat-in and take-out grub, a 24-hour gym, a pool and sundeck (open 8am to 8pm), a self-service laundromat, sofa beds for extra guests and luggage storerooms. So next time your mates ask to crash at your place, politely suggest they ‘Rove’ Downtown instead and you can meet them at the bar. You know it makes sense.
