The OG Prince Eric thinks Harry Styles should play him in the reboot
Prince Eric has spoken (well, the original voice actor) and he thinks Harry Styles is a great choice for the royal heartthrob role in the live action version of The Little Mermaid.
For the past weeks, the former One Direction singer has been linked to the role of Prince Eric and the internet was here for it. Now, the star has the backing of perhaps one of the most important people – the voice of Eric in the 1989 animated film. Christopher Daniel Barnes is thrilled with the possibility of Harry playing his role and thinks he is the perfect fit for the remake. “The guy's a rock star, actor, philanthropist...," Barnes says. "It's a pretty good start for a prince, right? I think he'll do a great job.”
Christopher also had high praises for Halle Bailey, the new Ariel whose casting had sparked a controversy due to her skin colour. On this he said, “I actually didn’t know who she was so I googled her and saw her singing, and I just thought, “Wow, she’s going to be a fantastic Ariel”.
‘She has this very Ariel-esque quality. If you look at her sing, she has this vitality for life, this exuberance, optimism, and you can see it shine through when she sings. You can tell that she’s got a strong personality which I think is essential to the character … If somebody thinks that skin colour is an essential element to Ariel, then they don’t understand the power of myth and what the story’s really about.”
Along with Harry Styles, Javier Bardem, Awkwafina, Melissa McCarthy and Jacob Tremblay are also swimming around roles for the live action that is rumoured to be released in 2021.
