‘Slumdog Millionaire’ child actor says goodbye to slums

“Slumdog Millionaire” child star Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail is ecstatic after leaving behind India's slums and visiting his new home for the first time.

Azhar, who was plucked from impoverished obscurity to star in the film, is preparing to move into his new residence after Indian government officials took him on a tour of the $7,820 property on Tuesday, June 9, 2009.

The 10-year-old was made to live on the streets after his residence in the slums of Mumbai, India was torn down by authorities in May.

But now he cannot wait to move into the single-roomed property.

He says, "We can now sleep with a roof over our heads and we can leave the smell behind.

"It is so much larger than where we used to live and I am very grateful to Mumbai for giving me this house. I can't wait to move in but I will be sad to leave my friends."
