Ten Minutes With Jen Atkin

How did you get your big break in the world of celebrity hair styling?

I was lucky enough to quickly land a job assisting one of LA’s most famed hair stylists Andy Lecompte not long after I moved there to do hair.  It wasn’t long before I was going with him on tour with Madonna, travelling the world and styling the dancer’s hair. It was an amazing and surreal experience.  Another moment was when Lorraine Schwartz introduced me to John Galliano while he was at the house of Dior. I would get to go to PFW and do his hair and assist other artists on the shows. Working with icons like Guido and Orlando Pita was an amazing experience.

What is your most defining moment in the industry?

Doing the cover of Vogue with the amazingly cool Gwen Stefani was a major milestone. Also this year when I was named one of WWD’s 50 Most Influential Women in the Beauty Industry! It was such a shock and an honor.

Of course the launch of Mane Addicts has brought a whole new aspect to my work and what I’m doing, I love having a platform for artists to showcase their work and share with the world. I think education is so important these days and I know a LOT of celebrity and editorial hairstylists that are ready to help influence budding artists.

A fair few celebs have chopped of their locks recently. What do you think will be the next biggest celebrity hair trend?

Short hair is still fun and refreshing this year, and getting rid of damaged ends adds youthfulness to hair. We’re also seeing a lot more blunt looks this year with less layers around the face and more fullness.

Which celebrity always gets it right on the red carpet?

I love everything Julianne Moore does. My good friend Marcus Francis does her hair and she is the chicest.

Tell us a little about Mane Addicts…what inspired you to launch the site?

I was inspired to launch the site to create an online community based solely on hair! Before Mane Addicts, when I’d post a look on my Instagram, I’d get so many people asking for more. I wanted to create a community where artists could share their work with a broader audience around the world. We showcase the experts behind the scenes offering hair stories, expert advice, how-tos, product reviews, and brand collaborations .

What is your can’t-live-without hair product?

Oribe Dry Texture Spray

What are your top hair tips for girls-on-the-go?

Invest in a good haircut. When you have the right haircut for your hair type and face shape, you will have to do less styling for it to look good!

You have visited Dubai may times, why? What are you most looking forward to on this trip?

Usually my trips to Dubai are so short, and I spend most of my time working at Belle Femme which I love! This trip I am looking forward to connecting with so many more people and sharing my work in a different setting.

Tell us more about the Mane Addicts Seminar event that is taking place with celebrity guest Khloe Kardashian...

Khloe is so fun and adventurous with her beauty looks. I usually get so many emails or comments on her photos asking how I created something. This seminar is going to be a great opportunity for Mary and I to offer a sneak peak into our morning glam sessions with her. We’ll show exactly how to create a few of her favorite beauty looks with a live audience. It’s going to be so fun, I can’t wait to share more!
