It may come as a surprise, given the prominence of MMA fitness in the region, but prior to Tam’s 2008 arrival in Dubai from England, it was a non-existent concept. Now the managing partner of HM MMA & Fitness, Tam has engineered a flourishing platform for Mixed Martial Arts, through a series of endeavours that hit a record high last year. Kicking off 2013 with the launch of the Dubai Fighting Championship, Tam was the driving force behind the four sold-out shows that allowed regional fighters to showcase their skills and which were broadcast to 22 Middle Eastern countries. The fourth and final event, held at the Madinat Arena, saw international MMA fighters Paul ‘Semtex’ Daley and Rodrigo Ribeiro battle it out. The bout attracted global attention, putting Dubai on the map for future international promotions.
In April, Tam founded an MMA gym called Glory MMA & Fitness, before setting to work on making HM MMA a state-of-the-art facility. With some of the best international names in the business making appearances as guest teachers, up-and-coming regional stars having made the gym their official training camp, and HH Sheikh Maktoum Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum giving the initiative his approval, the future looks bright for aspiring fighters, thanks to Tam’s visionary leadership.
