How has the business progressed?
Bobby: We’ve just opened the second Bob’s in Dubai’s Business Bay and the third will open in Dubai’s Tecom area this April. We’re starting to franchise the business too and are setting our sights in the Middle East and Asia. We’ve already sold the rights to Iran and there are outlets in Tehran.
How did you get into fish and chips?
Suzy: We opened The Rupee Room in Dubai Marina in 2004 – the first British curry house in the UAE. Tapping into the ‘missing food from back home’ concept, we opened The Fish & Chips Room in Dubai’s JBR in 2007. We sold that in February 2011 and in September 2011 Bob’s was born.
What’s the best advice you can give?
Suzy: Don’t work with your spouse!
How would you like your peers and family to remember you?
Bobby: As the couple who gave Dubai some fabulous eateries and introduced some great British traditional food to the Middle East.
What’s the biggest misconception about the UAE?
Bobby: That it’s a strict Muslim country. As long as you respect that you’re in another country and conduct yourself in a proper manner, life is just as good as, if not better than, your home country.
