UK Police have released a 19-year-old arrested in connection with the murder of Nahid Almanea, a Saudi student studying at the University of Essex.
The 31-year-old PhD student was walking down a footpath in Colchester, Essex, on the morning of 17 June when she was attacked and stabbed 16 times.
The suspect was arrested in connection with a separate assault on 19 June, when a woman reported that a man had tried to grab her while she was jogging in Colchester. A 52-year-old suspect, initially arrested in connection with Nahid’s death, has also been released.
Authorities are still trying to confirm the motive – the chance that this might have been a hate-crime triggered by Nahid’s traditional Muslim dress is one of the possibilities they are following, said police officials.
CCTV footage shows Nahid walking down the road 20 minutes before the attack. Police said they hope that this might motivate witnesses to come forward with any information they may have about the case.
