Smoking e-cigarettes in malls is ILLEGAL
Smokers, read carefully!
Contrary to popular belief, smoking e-cigarettes in malls is illegal and subject to a fine of up to Dhs1,000.
Dubai Municipality has reiterated that the smoking ban, which came into effect in 2009, also applies to e-cigarettes. The municipality has also stresses that smokers only use designated smoking areas and refrain from lighting up near the entrances of malls.
"The municipality has noticed that there are some shopping centres that allow violations of the indoor smoking ban, especially the so-called electronic cigarettes, and allow smoking at the entrances of shopping centres," said Redha Salman, director of public health and safety department at the municipality, reports Khaleej Times.
Khater Al Nuaimi, director of customer relations and partners department at the Dubai Municipality, organised a meeting with a group of officials from shopping centres in Dubai to discuss customer complaints about e-cigarette smoking at malls in the emirate. The purpose of the meeting was to reinforce the anti-smoking law in order to protect public health.
Malls have been directed to encourage their security personnel to put up signs and warnings at all entrances to politely remind smokers about the ban.
Be mindful the next time you're out shopping!
