One of the most entertaining, jaw-dropping summer Discovery Channel programs that swims around the king of the oceans is back, but this time, instead of watching it on your TV, you get to watch it live. Yep, Shark Week is back in the emirates.
This week, Atlantis the Palm, UAE’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and the highly celebrated conservationist ‘Sharkman’ Mike Rutzen, are going to make waves with fun-filled and adrenaline packed Shark Week celebrations.
Starting from today, July 28 until Saturday August 3, you can join the Sharkman in a variety of different shark-related activities. Up until Tuesday, 30 July, you can dive alongside the celebrity diver to delve into a ‘Shark Discovery’ at the Atlantis’ Ambassador Lagoon at a discounted price of Dhs1,305.
Non-certified scuba divers will get a chance to experience a dive while learning about the array of marine creatures Atlantis homes from the expert himself.
The National Geographic and Discovery Channel star says, “We recently completed a scientific study which, based on genetic diversity of the population, indicated that there are only 353 to 522 great white sharks left around the African coastline. It’s time to do something for the species, before it’s too late.”
On Tuesday 2 PM, Mike Rutzen will also be conducting a special panel at The Lost Chambers Aquarium where he will talk about interacting with sharks, shine light on shark conservation and even tell intriguing stories of his shark-filled adventures. The talk is priced at Dhs110 with a Q&A session at the end and is absolutely free for little pups from 3 - 11 who wear a shark themed attire (fun fact: baby sharks do-do-do-do are called pups).
Along with that, Shark Week 2019 will include several educational and recreational activities with sharks as the main theme. There will also be competitions aimed at teaching the younger generation about the importance of sharks in preserving the ecological balance and why they need urgent care to protect them from extinction.
Atlantis will also be offering a 10 percent discount on all its shark based activities, from the ‘Shark Explorer’ to the ‘Predator Dive’ (where you actually get to handfeed the sharks!).
Y’all better be there participating in the activities to shore up support for the amazing campaign to protect these magnificent toothy creatures held from 10 AM – 5 PM throughout the week.

We’re so ready for this wild week!
