Moldovan violinist Pasha Cazan

World music fans have a treat in store as Sharjah stages a slew of free concerts by artists from all over the globe.

Al Majaz Waterfront and Heart of Sharjah will host a number of shows from Saturday 17 to Tuesday, 20 January as part of Sharjah World Music Festival, which was first held to great acclaim last year.

Visitors to Al Majaz Waterfront will be able to catch a performance by Furat Qaddouri Music Centre’s choir on Saturday, 17 January at 9pm; the same venue will host Moldovan violin master Pasha Cazan on Sunday, 18 January, also at 9pm. A talented and creative violinist, Cazan uses the electric violin to put a fresh spin on numerous classical pieces.

At Heart of Sharjah, the Canella Trio, composed of Bulgarian harpist Lidia Stankulova, Cuban flutist Malena Avila and Argentinian cellist Clara Asuaje, will present a blend of Western and Latin music on Monday, 19 January at 8pm. Two hours later, guests will be treated to an emotional and moving concert by celebrated oud player Sadiq Jaafar, who’s most famous for his album Arabian Oud Nights.

The festival’s concerts will continue at Heart of Sharjah on Tuesday, 20 January at 8pm, with a performance by renowned Jordanian musician Kamal Mussalam, a regular visitor to the UAE, who will play on the guitar and will be accompanied by Francesca Palamidessi from Italy. Later on the same night, at 10pm, British guitarist Jason Carter will present a number of well known pieces, mixed with his own compositions. He will be accompanied by well-known vocalist Pepe Martinez who is well known for his flexibility and interest in many styles of music, from flamenco to jazz and rock.

Sharjah World Music Festival first took place at Al Qasba early last year, organised by Furat Qaddouri Music Centre and presented by Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq). As a result of its success, the event’s been expanded this time around to include five venues in the emirate – Al Majaz Amphitheatre, Al Majaz Waterfront, Al Qasba, Heart of Sharjah, and The Flag Island.

Sharjah World Music Festival is presented by Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) and organised by Furat Qaddouri Music Centre.
