Shaikha Al Qassemi
I’m proud to be the MENA's first female RedBull athlete and a member of the Lululemon Ambassadors’ team. I follow a competitive programme that consists of three hours of training daily to achieve my fitness goals. Inside the gym, I want to progress in movements like the muscle-up and the handstand walk, and increase my weightlifting numbers. Outside the gym, I want to encourage more women to move and not be afraid of strength training, fitness and sport in general.
For the past two years, I’ve been working on opening my own fitness facility, Platform in Nad Al Hamar, which will launch in March 2017. The facility will have training provision for Crossfit, with both co-ed and ladies-only spaces. It also has an Olympic Lifting Floor, which I hope will help to promote the sport in the UAE.
Membership at Platform is designed to include men, women and children, so that families can come to train together and learn more about the sport of Crossfit and its benefits – sportsmanship with fitness should bring people together.
My brother’s coffee shop, Ratios, will also be opening in the space, its décor includes wood taken from old family dhows, as well as a large tree from our family home, which had recently died.
