Sergio Mendes to Play in the UAE!
A Brazilian jazz legend is coming to the UAE!
Sérgio Mendes will showcase his eclectic mix of soul, funk, jazz and pop at Abu Dhabi Festival 2015 (ADF15), to be held in March.
The star received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song in 2012 after co-writing Real in Rio for the animated film Rio. He’s also won three Grammys over the course of his five-decade career.
Joining Mendes on the bill will be a fellow Grammy winner, but from a very different genre. Italian conductor Riccardo Muti has conducted some of the world’s greatest orchestras, from the Berlin Philharmonic to the Bayerischer Rundfunk, the New York Philharmonic to the Orchestre National de France.
Currently Music Director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, he’s won honours from around the world, including the Cavaliere di Gran Croce of the Italian Republic, the Verdienstkreuz from Germany, the decoration of Officer of the Legion of Honour from France and an Honorary Knighthood from the UK.
Muti will be leading Italy’s Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra, which he founded, with solo performances from German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. Regarded as one of the greatest violin virtuosos of our time, Mutter’s performed all over the world and set up the Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation in 2008 with the aim of supporting gifted young musicians.
Hoda Al Khamis-Kanoo, Founder of the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation (ADMAF), said: “We are truly delighted to be welcoming these stunning artists as we further celebrate Abu Dhabi Festival’s pivotal role in nurturing cultural exchange and artistic innovation.
“By bringing the world to Abu Dhabi, we believe it is important to go beyond mere entertainment and demonstrate the transformative power of music, while reflecting the Festival’s core values of mutual respect and tolerance.”
