SATC: Who Will Star in the Film's Prequel?
Sex And The City was one of the most popular US TV series ever made – over the six years it aired Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha became like our best friends and as such their tearful farewell drew in 4.1million viewers! Cashing in on the popularity SATC the movie was released, yet the reviews were disappointing. Determined to right their wrongs the fashion savvy gals, and author Candace Bushnell decided on a second comeback with Sex And The City 2, which also bombed yet more disastrously – in fact, it was so awful it was nominated for several Razzies.
Yet, ever resolute, and no doubt desperate to redeem her reputation as a writer, Candace hasn’t given up. She’s bringing us another City story, yet this time our mature ladies are out, and instead it’s a prequel based on her latest book The Carrie Diaries, with the stars less self-assured or savvy than their older counterparts. She explains, “Sex And The City was specifically about 30-something women, and in this, the women would be in their late teens, maybe early twenties and they wouldn’t be as confident and they wouldn’t have everything figured out the way the characters do in Sex And The City.”Ahlan! looks at the possible contenders to fill the four ladies’ Jimmy Choos...
Who will play Carrie Bradshaw (SJP)?
Carrie is the movie’s protagonist, a New York columnist who writes about relationships and shopping. When not falling in and out of love she’s purchasing expensive shoes.
Sarah Jessica Parker
The 45-year-old has put herself forward, saying, “Maybe they should use old footage of me. And in this new age of Avatar, what about a new 17-year-old SJP?” Insisting her role as Patty Greene in TV show Square Pegs would be perfect, “That might’ve been high school Carrie.”
It’s been thought that the new face of Chanel and Stella McCartney is a dead cert to portray the fashion queen, though Candace is yet to confirm. Blake certainly has the sartorial credentials, and her role as Serena in Gossip Girl proves she has the ability to play a self-absorbed character.
With her bouncy curls, and slightly annoying over-enthusiasm, the 21-year-old is a mini SJP. The fact she doesn’t have the style savvy of adult Carrie is perfect. We’re sure teen Carrie learned a lot while experimenting with both fashion and boys while growing up – it’d be like art imitating life for Taylor.
Who will play Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall)?
She’s older than the other girls and more confident with men and her career. Brazen and feisty, she’s at the top of her game and in control in a man’s world.
At 17 Dakota may seem too young to play bed-hopping Sam, who’s the oldest in the gang. However, Dakota’s proven she can look more than her years in her role as Cherie in The Runaways, a film that also further revealed her impressive range as a actress. She’s done serious, cutesy and funny, now she needs a sexy role to tick off her list.
The 23-year-old exudes sex appeal and one glance at her CV proves she already has experience in portraying the various entertaining sides to Samantha. In 90210 she is a delightfully narcissistic rich girl who has no qualms about being callous when she needs to. And as deviant Eden Lord in Nip/Tuck she loves a scandal!
The 17-year-old was clearly desperate to shed her sweet girl image from Gossip Girl when she exploded onto the music scene with her band The Pretty Reckless. Gone were the sweet outfits, which were replaced with entirely inappropriate bondage gear. The role of a burgeoning femme fatale would be an ideal acting career move.
Who will play Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon)?
A powerful lawyer and ardent feminist, she boasts a wicked sense of humour and pulls no punches. She’s overly protective of her girls, with whom she is always honest.
Thanks to her awesome hard-as-nails performance in Kick Ass, and her more recent role in 30 Rock as a mean-talking teen, Chloe has more of the essential skills to portray Miranda than her 14 years might initially suggest. The star has also proven to be a little style princess, giving her more kudos.
Nearly all of Ellen’s film characters boast the same traits – moody, opinionated, cynical, stubborn, feminist and generally against the male race. So, with much practice under her belt, the 24-year-old should be adept at playing the role that made Cynthia a household name.
Red hair. Check. Smart sense of humour. Check. No damsel in distress. Check. The 22-year-old is a strong contender for the role, however Emma perhaps has too much sex appeal for a young Miranda and her vast experience as a movie lead could leave her out of the running for the role.
Who will play Charlotte York (Kristin Davis)?
The sweet all-American girl who dreams of the perfect husband and family, prim and proper she believes in true love and sees the good in everyone.
Candace accidently slipped that the 18-year-old is her top choice for Charlotte, insisting, “I was looking at some pictures of Selena Gomez today and thinking she’d make a really good young Charlotte. She’s so pretty. I was like… gosh, wouldn’t she be great? I’m not good at this. If I say something like that, then the next thing I know, people are like, ‘no!’”
Although she’s placed an interest to reprise SJP’s character, the Glee star has that all-American sweetheart look that’s vital to this role. Though she’s 25, her youthful façade means she can pass as a teen. Her appearance is never short of immaculate and her mannerisms are sooo Char. Just dye those blonde locks brown and we have young Ms York.
Victoria may be our wild card, but just look at her – she’s a Charlotte mini-me. While her name might not be instantly recognisable she is no stranger to the silver screen. The 18-year-old has been acting since she was 10 and is already a Nickelodeon fave. A role in the new City film will be a great place to shine and move into the more adult-focused market.
