Sam Smith Settles Amicably With Tom Petty
Sam Smith: "Complete coincidence", apparently...

It looks like Sam Smith is going to have to put his hands in his pockets, after American rocker Tom Petty and ELO's Jeff Lynne were given a songwriting credit for Sam Smith's hit song Stay With Me.

Petty Lynne were added to the song credits after Petty's team noticed a likeness between Smith's song and Petty's 1989 hit I Won't Back Down. After a quick conflab between the two camps, they settled the matter amicably and agreed that Petty and Lynne should be granted percentages.

According to Smith's people, there was nothing sneaky about it. "Not previously familiar with the 1989 Petty/Lynne song. The writers of Stay With Me listened to I Won't Back Down and acknowledged the similarity," a representative for Smith told America's Billboard magazine. "Although the likeness was a complete coincidence, all involved came to an immediate and amicable agreement in which Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne are now credited as co-writers."
