Salman Khan Has Been Jailed For 5 Years
Bollywood actor Salman Khan has been sentenced to five years in jail, and faces a penalty of Rs10,000 (Dhs565), for the 1998 blackbuck poaching case.
The actor - who pleaded not guilty - was found guilty of poaching the endangered animal while shooting movie Hum Saath-Saath Hain in 1998.
According to sources, the 52-year-old actor will be sent to Jodhpur Central Jail, but it is expected that the actor will appeal the conviction.
This is not Khan's first jail stint. He has spent time behind bars in 1998, 2006 and 2007.
Bollywood stars, Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Tabu and Neelam Kothari, were all also accused of poaching, but were acquitted due to a lack of evidence.
UPDATE: The actor has now been granted bail, after spending two nights in jail. But he cannot leave India without court permission.
"Arguments were already over in the morning but Judge Joshi reserved the order for post lunch," a court source has said. "He has to produce personal bail bond worth Rs50,000 (Dhs2,800) and produce a Rs25,000 (Dhs1,400) [guarantee] from two persons each who shall guarantee that he will agree to all bail conditions."
