Ryan Lochte, the team USA Olympic swimmer gave an interview where he alleged that he, and his team mates had be robbed at gun-point at a Rio gas station. However, it was later revealed that the swimmers hadn’t been robbed at all. Ryan and his friends repeatedly vandalised the gas station, and the security guards were simply asking them for money to fix the damages.
Ryan now admits that he was intoxicated when he gave the first interview, but still claims that the security guard pointed his gun at them, even though that wasn’t revealed in the camera footage at the gas station.
“It's traumatic to be out late with your friends in a foreign country—with a language barrier—and have a stranger point a gun at you and demand money to let you leave, but regardless of the behaviour of anyone else that night, I should have been much more responsible in how I handled myself and for that am sorry to my teammates, my fans, my fellow competitors, my sponsors and the hosts of this great event” said Lochte, in an emotional interview.
The consequences of Lochte’s lies resulted in his teammates, Gunna Bentz, Jack Conger and James Feigen being detained in Brazil, with Conger and Bentz actually being pulled off a U.S bound plane!
Ryan, looking teary-eyed, explained how he felt about his teammates being detained in Rio for police questioning: “Hurt, I mean I let my team down. I wanted to be there, I don’t want them to think that I left them dry because they’re my teammates and I definitely wanted to be there”.
The Olympian was askedwhy he didn’t come forward sooner with the truth, so that his teammates wouldn’t have to be detained to which Ryan explained he wanted his friends back safely on US soil before he said anything.
It looks like Ryan Lochte really is regretful, or just a really good actor, as he hired Justin Bieber’s crisis manager to help him with damage control!
