Rugby Sevens: Countdown is On!
Rugby Sevens

Not only is this one of the biggest sporting weekends of the year, it’s also one of the hugest parties too! Whether you’re into Rugby or not, you’re bound to get swept up in the action, which will take place at the specially created Seven’s Stadium from Thursday 28 to Saturday 30 November.

The event is actually made up of three tournaments. The first is the second round of the HSBC Seven’s World Series, which will see 16 teams including Australia, Scotland, Canada, Fiji and South Africa, compete for the Emirates Airline trophy.

Also taking to the pitch will be 12 teams in the IRB Women’s World Sevens Series. Then there’s the invitational tournament, which includes everything from new players to international standard participants. Meanwhile, crowds are encouraged to wear fancy dress, paint their faces (the theme this year is ‘get your game face on’) and generally have a party in the stands (though this year there’s a special one reserved for families).

On the Friday and Saturday evenings the fun will continue after the matches at Rugby Rock in the Rugby Village at the stadium.

The Invitationals this year will see a record 213 teams made up of  3144 players take to 7 pitches over 3 days in 513 matches!

Watch out for Ahlan! News Ed JJ who’ll be playing for Joining Jack, which boasts British cycling hero Bradley Wiggins as it’s water boy! The team aims to raise awareness of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in the name of Jack Johnson, whose dad AJ is a former professional rugby player.
