You've got to hand it to Robert Pattinson, the man knows how to handle an awkward situation. In his first interview since the story of his girlfriend Kristen Stewart's affair with married director Rupert Sanders broke, R-Patz was honest, funny and super charming.
Jon Stewart landed the Q&A with the Twilight star on The Daily Show, and he opened with the understatement of the year, asking Rob, "What have you been up to?"
Then, when Jon reportedly said, "The world has ended", Rob replied, "It has" before adding, "I had a joke prepared! I was all set up and ready to go."
"OK, let's just do this," Jon continued, bringing out two pints of Ben & Jerry's ice cream (Karamel Sutra for Rob and Cherry Garcia for him, with a couple of spoons). "Now, we're just a couple of gals talking," he added. "All right...Tell me everything."
"I'm trying to avoid eating this, I'm going to split my Spanx," the Cosmopolis star joked. But he did dig into the sweet treat anyway and told Jon, "This is a great
idea, I feel amazing."
The Daily Show host moved along quickly then, asking Rob, "So what are we doing here? Are you all right? Is everything OK? I'm worried about you,"
"This is the weird thing about these
interviews... my biggest problem in my life is I'm cheap, and I didn't hire a publicist," Rob revealed. "I'm going to hire a publicist."
"I think you should," Jon agreed, "although, unless you have a time machine...". Rob took this smoothly, saying "Either way."
Of course, Jon turned sympathetic later, saying, "Listen, the last time I had a bad breakup, Ben and Jerry got me through some of the tougher times." And he echoed the feelings of Rob fans the world over when he said, "So, I thought you and I could bond over this and talk about, 'Boy, you are better off, kick her to the curb. Whatevah!"
The host continued, "When you are young and you break up, it's powerful and it feels like the world is ending. This is the first time I have seen the world actually react that way. It's insanity. Here is my wish for you, that you get to handle your business in private, in your personal life, and I wish you all the best."
Rob then smiled and said, "I should've talked about Cosmopolis!"
Speaking of Cosmopolis, Rob showed up looking dapper at the movie's premiere at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC just a few hours The Daily Show interview aired. He signed
autographs for the crowd but avoided talking about the Kristen issue, simply
telling fans, "Thank you, guys, for being here."
Whether or not he'll forgive Kristen remains to be seen, but Rob seems to be doing alright for now.
