With Ramadan fast approaching, Al Nafoorah’s iftar is one you have to add to your to-do list. As the heat kicks in over the next few weeks, the summer tent gives you the feel of dining outdoors with the bonus of some serious air-conditioning. There’s the expected selection of hot and cold mezze, and special mention goes to Al Nafoorah’s signature hummus, which is almost mousse-like in its creaminess and features cumin and roasted pine nuts. The clear highlight of the hot section is the chicken livers, which are pan-fried and finished with pomegranate syrup – a sweet counter to the mineral quality of the liver. We’ve never seen a mixed grill presented like they do at Al Nafoorah with the skewers sticking out into the air from a silver holder like giant meat porcupine. It tasted much better than that sounds. I’m a big fan of muhalbiya (milk pudding with rose water), and while their offering is on the watery side it still provides that warm, sweet pudding comfort.
