There are restaurants that are trendy and then there’s Zuma that positively crackles with trendiness. Much like the region’s A-list who converge upon it (there’s never an empty table in sight so you’d best book in advance), the food here is the kind that stands head and shoulders above the crowd. Thinly sliced sea bass sashimi with a dressing of bright ikura (salmon roe) and slivers of rock chives creating an inventive dance of flavours and textures; spinach salad with sesame paste and sesame oil – the meeting of the sesames tastes a lot like peanut butter and the greens are better for it; crab miso soup that’s comforting and adventurous all at once.
Take chief sommelier Jacqueline’s expert advice to pick vinos and sakes to go with your meal; and for mains do sample the excellent miso-marinated black cod – it’s the kind of dish that keeps connoisseurs coming back for more. And just when you think the food bar can’t be raised any higher, along comes dessert. Moist and melt-in-your-mouth, the green tea-flavoured cake topped with curlicued caramelised bananas and crushed peanuts is the best we’ve ever had and the prettiest we’ve ever seen. Take a bow, Zuma!
