New Dubai gastropub opens with a roar

Restaurant review: The Black Lion, H Hotel, Dubai

I’m in love with this small but perfectly formed new gastropub. Top marks for the super-comfy deep leather seats, hip urban décor, music by the likes of The Killers, Blondie and OneRepublic, and enthusiastic food-loving staff who seem genuinely thrilled to be serving up such amazing grub.

Spoil yourself with the Angus tenderloin and half a Canadian lobster; I had to stop myself from drinking the green peppercorn sauce, which tasted like a salted caramel gravy with just the mildest hint of pepper.

Other must-trys include the short rib hash with fried quail eggs, with silky shreds of meat studded with perfectly cooked soft sunny little egg yolks and cubes of velvety potato – a winning cure for the morning after the night before, we’re told.

The mac 'n' cheese is <so> worth the carbs with its light crispy topping, and the prawn cocktail is upgraded with a heady Bloody Mary dressing on top.

The exaltation doesn’t end there. All four desserts on offer are knock-outs, including the chocolate brownie with sour cherry ice cream, the deep-filled apple pie and the tangy blackberry fool – but my heart belongs to the baked vanilla cheesecake with its sparkling crown of salted caramel crumble.

I can’t think of anywhere I’d rather be on a Saturday afternoon.
