Restaurant review: Tasca by José Avillez, Mandarin Oriental Jumeira

His Belcanto flagship restaurant in Lisbon is a two-Michelin starred foodie haven (and was the first Portuguese spot to gain this accolade), but despite the swish sixth-floor location, stunning sea and city views — and yes, the pricing — José Avillez insists Tasca, which literally means ‘tavern,’ is a much more relaxed, social concept that’s suited to family-style sharing.

Seafood — as befitting a famous seafaring nation — is definitely the focus with grilled scarlet shrimp, salted cod,  and tuna tartare cones sitting alongside plates of truffle-accented blue lobster, all beautifully presented.

Push the figurative boat out and opt for the seafood platter to share. And yes, there’s spiced piri piri chicken with a multitude of dips and fries for the more unadventurous. Just don’t forget to order the supremely light signature avocado tempura —given the technique was taken to Japan from Portugal, it’s only right that here it’s done perfectly.
