RESTAURANT REVIEW: Spice & Ice, JLT

Progressive Indian dining with a lively vibe, molecular bites and mega deals

Hey, there’s a party happening at Spice & Ice and you’re all invited! This new progressive Indian restaurant next to JLT’s Movenpick hotel adds yet another instant hit to the area’s growing portfolio of places to be seen. Cocktail Kitchen, Mythos, Nola and now here – they’re all venues that are buzzing at the weekend and making a reservation is a must.

It’s no wonder Spice & Ice is busy on Thursdays with their opening offer of unlimited appetisers, from chicken tikka to veg samosas, and drinks including hops, grapes, sparking grape and cocktails for just Dhs199. The music’s pumping and the open molecular gastro buffet is a crowd-pleaser; diners can watch yoghurt spheres being created, and sample nitrogen-filled dragon puffs that, as the name suggests, make you puff like a dragon when you pop one into your mouth.

Yes, there’s drama, but there are also some seriously impressive dishes on the a la carte menu, like the towering prawn sukha tamatar, cooked in a tandoor and infused with sundried tomato and basil, and their theatrical interpretation of mango shrikhand, a sweet yoghurt-based dessert that’s served here in mini ice cream cones with mango spheres on the side of a smoking plate. It’s far more fun than your standard Thursday-night curry-fest.
