Restaurant Review: Pei Wei
INFO: Dubai Marina Walk, 04 455 0055, www.peiweiuae.alshaya.com.
You’ve probably had the advert tag line for Pei Wei stuck in your head for the past few weeks: “Pei Wei eat in five languages!” With the accompanying theme tune, it definitely gets stuck in your head, so marketing job well done there. The concept is simple for this faster, more casual spin-off of PF Changs. Walk past the interactive menu boards, make your choice of protein and cooking style, order and take a number. The food arrives in a rush, which is great for impatient rumbling tummies. You’d be crazy to miss out on the chicken lettuce wraps, sorry PF Changs but I think your little brother’s outdone you.
There’s four options to choose from as a base – chicken, steak, shrimp or vegetables – and then a range of Asian-inspired sauces. For the heat seakers there’s Thai Dynamite and green curry, Mandarin Kung Pao, Spicy Korean and the signature Pei Wei Spicy. You can also look forward to favourites like sweet and sour and ginger broccoli. You also have the option to cut the fat by about 30 per cent by ordering your protein steamed rather than fried. This is certainly westernised Asian, but it still delivers the flavours associated with the various cuisines from the ginger and garlic to scallion and chilli. It’s a great price point for generous portions, particularly the noodle dishes (you have to try the Spice Market Noodles with sriracha). With delivery currently available in the Marina and the next outlet set to open off Al Thanya Street, I’m pretty sure Pei Wei is going to be on many a speed-dial claiming top spot as Dubai’s fave Asian takeout for quite some time.
