There are restaurants in Dubai that attract a certain clientele because of the excellent cuisine, and there are some that draw patrons because of the scene; but there are few that are a magnet for both. Based in the five-star H Hotel, award winning restaurant Okku, has secured itself as one of the most sought after eateries.

The luxury Japanese restaurant and lounge serves up exceptional dishes in an atmosphere that offers both a relaxed dining experience as well as a chic lounge complete with resident DJ who brings in an upwardly mobile late-night crowd ready to dance.

The menu is packed with mouth-watering Asian-inspired delicacies and has an outstanding sushi offering. To begin, we opted for the excellent chilli-garlic edamame, followed by the tantalising Wagyu beef tataki, which came as seared slithers of beef topped with truffle ponzu and a minute garlic crisp. Afterwards, the tiger shrimp tempura, masago, spring onion in creamy wasabi was a taste sensation. The portion sizes, while not overwhelming, are certainly plentiful and the delicious and generous portion of the cooked-to-perfection grilled yuzu-saikyo miso marinated black Atlantic cod was just the ticket.

It’s rare to see lamb on a Japanese menu but the zuke New Zealand lamb cutlets, moyashi bean sprout itamae and citrus-soy was seriously tender and a contender for one of the best mains we’ve had in the city. And the desserts, particularly the signature green tea soufflé and the impossibly moist chocolate fondant, are exceptional.
