Observatory may be known by many for its bar, but the underrated restaurant deserves a closer look. This four-year-old establishment on the 52nd floor of the Marriott Harbour Hotel has some of the best views in Dubai Marina, which makes it popular with celebs. A-listers spotted at Observatory include Formula One drivers Jenson Button and Michael Schumacher, and David and Victoria Beckham!
This place is a perfect for a hot date with the hubby thanks to the dramatic views and the romantic lighting. The food – a mix of European specialities – is commendable too.
For starters, we went for the staff’s recommendations of mussels in cream and white vino with fresh herbs, plus deep fried camembert with red currant compote – a filling and worthy choice. On the main course menu are a range of meat and fish options such as BBQ pork ribs, meatballs, battered cod, duck breast, plus pastas including tomato and mozzarella gnocchi and risotto of the day. A speciality is the grill selection of juicy fillet, sirloin and rib-eye steaks. All steaks are 100 per cent US certified grain fed Angus beef and ours, cooked medium rare, was perfectly marbled with a soft pink interior.
We also opted for sea bass – so soft it falls apart in your mouth – complemented with flavoursome pequillo pepper sauce. Then we moved on to the succulent Canadian lobster, which was brought out live and bound before the chefs cooked it.
If you have room for desserts after the surf and turf, there’s a variety of sweets, our fave being the caramelised spiced apple tart with bourbon vanilla ice cream and cinnamon sauce. It tastes as good as it looks.
