There’s something so deeply holiday-esque about sitting on a seaside veranda while slurping an ice-cold Margarita – and so begins a night out at Maya, Le Royal Meridien’s recently revamped Mexican restaurant by the sea. We ordered the jolly-sounding queso fundido, Mexico’s answer to fondue. The tray of molten cheese features mushrooms and spices and is presented at the table on a burner with a stack of warm tortillas. It’s a bit like rolling your own cheese on toast – a novel experience, but we would have liked some crudités to dip in. Our favourite starter was the guacamole, which comes solo, or with tuna tartare, or spicy crab on a two-tier silver platter with a base filled with nachos. Absolutely gorgeous, though the nachos too easily. So, why do really love this place? It’s the meat. Both the seductively smoky US beef rib, served with achiote-truffle sauce and potato purée, and the filet mignon Mexicano, served with poblano chile potato gratin, elicited groans of pleasure. And then there was the dessert. The crispy cinnamon-sugar-coated churros served with three dipping cups filled with Mexican hot chocolate, traditional Mexican sweet milk, and milk cajeta caramel created a sugar rush so mighty we were ready to dance the night away.
