Restaurant review: Marina Social
If you’ve not heard of Jason Atherton and his impressive new Dubai venture, then where have you been hiding? It’s the latest opening in the renowned chef’s ‘Social’ line of venues to be found everywhere from the UK to Australia. Think urban understated interiors with wood panels and a buzzing vibe.
A typical evening here starts with a quick drink at the restaurant’s Social Room bar where expert mixologists can whip up pretty much any cocktail you like. So far, so London-chic. The ‘Feed Me’ menu comes highly recommended, with either four, six or eight courses comprising the chef’s favourite dishes – we went for six at Dhs550 per person.
For starters, I was most impressed by the goats cheese ‘churros’ with truffle honey and the Italian beef tomato with burrata and 25-year aged balsamic, which came served as a whole tomato with the creamy cheese in the middle. I uncovered the secret of how they prepare this, but you’ll have to figure that one out for yourself! Other starters include Perle Blanche oysters which slide off the shell and a quirky ‘English Breakfast tea and toast’ with wild mushroom, delightfully served up in a very British teapot.
Next up: duck leg agnolotti pasta with white onion purée and the potato gnocci with roasted pumpkin and wild mushrooms. The duck itself was fragrant and sweet, with a crunchy savoury crumble on the side for added texture; the gnocci melted in the mouth. Sea bream seared to perfection with green beans and sun-dried tomato made a good carb-free alterative.
Desserts include Greek yoghurt mousse (like a dreamy breakfast in pudding format), and caramelised apple tart for the sweet-toothed.
Marina Social is exactly what the marina needs. With a so many cool urban restaurants opening up downtown, this end of Dubai has been lacking. Now it has somewhere on par with the price tag to match. INFO: Intercontinental Dubai Marina, 04 446 6664, email@example.com, marinasocialdubai.com
