Restaurant Review: JB's Gastropub, JLT
JB's Gastropub, JLT
The minute you walk through the door of JB’s, you get a good feeling – it’s how I imagine the patrons of famous TV bar Cheers would have felt, had the venue been real.
Despite this new gastropub having been open for just a couple of weeks at the time of our review, Ian, our waiter, knew the menu like the back of his hand and was intuitive about what I fancied. I tried to order a healthy crab salad to start, but he talked me into the grinds, a pot of deep-fried crispy cuts, possibly best described as a meat sundae. It was insanely delicious, and so filling.
Moving onto the mains, there was so much to choose from. There are pots of Mediterranean mussels, various types of sausage by the metre (yes, by the metre!), gourmet sarnies (smoked beef brisket with provolone cheese and onions being my final choice), “build-your-own” mac and cheese with up to 10 top-up ingredients to be added, duck dogs made with duck sausage and foie gras, meat-laden roasting pans to be shared, house signatures like the Atlantic salmon served with celeriac purée and crushed olives, bar-food staples such as fish and chips, and ample cheese and charcuterie boards. The menu is creative, fun and fabulously seductive.
Ending on a sweet note wasn’t an option, considering the generous portions dished up for my starter and main, but I was encouraged by the house slogan, “You can’t buy happiness but you can buy desserts”. Next time, I may try one of the “adult milkshakes”, like the Mexican-themed brûlée, made with vanilla custard and ice cream, spiked with Mexico’s most famous tipple, or perhaps the Bourbon Black Bottom Pie, chocolate ganache, Graham cracker crust and coffee bourbon cream.
The only thing I didn’t love about this place was the bookshelf-print wallpaper; I’d prefer something more original, but that’s hardly a deal breaker. In the words of Schwarzenegger, I’ll be back! INFO: Amwaj Rotana Hotel, JBR, Dubai, 04 428 2000,,
