Both of the UAE’s Hakkasan restaurants received enough votes from our panel of judges to make it into the Hot 100 this year. Founded in London in 2001 by Abu Dhabi property investment company Tasameem, Hakkasan quickly established itself as one of the most successful Cantonese restaurants in the world, growing to include locations in both Hanway Place and Mayfair in London, as well as Miami, Mumbai, Abu Dhabi and most recently Dubai, opened last November. Uma Thurman, Morgan Freeman and Clive Owen are among the prestigious celeb diners to have visited the UAE branches. The venues share menus and when we visited earlier this year, we fell in love with their Dhs55 tofu side dish – who knew humble tofu could be packed with so much flavour?! Cooked in a clay pot with aubergine, shitake mushrooms, chilli and black beans, the tofu is sealed in a mix of spices and comes out as light and airy as melt-in-the-mouth scrambled egg.

Signature dishes, such as the much-lauded jasmine tea-smoked meats, from chicken to Wagyu beef, and the Hakka steamed dim sum platter – featuring scallop shumai, prawn dumplings and an experimental spicy black pepper duck dumpling – are a huge hit with Hakkasan fans. However, unsurprisingly, we couldn’t find anyone who had tried the Dhs3,500 abalone dish – we admit, we were intrigued, but our expense account doesn’t stretch that far.

On the Menu

APPETISERS
Jasmine tea-smoked Wagyu beef ribs, Dhs125
Hakka steamed dim sum platter, Dhs95

Braised whole abalone with truffle, Dhs3,500

DESSERTS
Salted caramel torte and peanut butter parfait with bitter chocolate sorbet, Dhs45
tonkabean creme brulee with rhubarb ice cream, Dhs45
