Restaurant Review: Hai Tao
Hai Tao

For an authentic taste of China no matter where you are in the United Arab Emirates, Hai Tao is one of the best.

The first thing that strikes you about the restaurant is the interior decoration. Its classic Chinese themed walls and heavy yet simple brown wood panelling screams of the orient and will make you feel as though you’ve stumbled into downtown Beijing.

The atmosphere and ambience is also fantastic with the restaurant being busy and vibrant when we passed by for dinner on a Thursday night. Now, the food itself is the real gem of Hai Tao. From the Chef’s recommendations, of Beijing duck, wok fried Gulf prawns and sizzling beef fillet to name a few, to the extensive dim sum menu – there’s a lot of choice. Gentlemen, take note, sleeveless tops and shorts are not allowed so make sure you’re at least wearing jeans and a T-shirt in this classy establishment.

Our particular favourite was the braised tiger prawn with spicy Szechuan sauce which didn’t disappoint with its fiery taste and freshly caught prawns. Equally impressive were the mixed vegetable fried rice noodles with spicy black bean and the sizzling fish with Chinese pickles sour pak choy. Almost all of the dishes are extremely good value for money considering how high the quality of the cuisine is, so don’t worry about burning through your credit card.

Dessert at a Chinese restaurant can often be a bit repetitive with place to place serving the same traditional sweet dishes, but here they knock it out of the park. Deep fried glutinous rice ball with sesame seeds, famous caramelized banana fritter with green tea ice cream and the chilled white fungus with papaya are all available for under Dhs30 each!

Ajman is not the most popular of emirates, especially with the bright lights of Dubai keeping it somewhat in its shadow, but no matter which part of the UAE you live in, a trip to this restaurant at the Kempinski Hotel Ajman is well worth the trip, so why not book a room in the hotel and make a night of it!
