Admittedly, I’m a sucker for good packaging when it comes to food. A cool carton or beautiful box makes me extra-excited about what’s inside. So imagine my joy when Fern w Fekhar’s delivery arrived at my door in a sturdy cardboard lunchbox, with a handle protruding out the side! It was home to the clay pot my meal was cooked in, and, as I discovered, the name Fern w Fekhar actually means ‘oven and clay pot’. The eatery serves traditional Arabian meat, chicken or fish cooked with aromatic rice in these little pots. I went for the seafood option and was impressed by how soft the fish was – it wasn’t at all overcooked.

My companion chose a falafel wrap, which was huge and had the ideal mix of creamy tahini with crunchy pickles and generous seasoning. It put our go-to falafel spot in the shade! Even the dessert of rose water-infused umm ali came in a clay pot and it’s comforting to know that they’re made by a charity initiative in India, with the proceeds of sales going towards the education of vulnerable families. Bonus points for food with a conscience!
